The Coming of Spring and Easter March 8

They have treated the wound of my people carelessly,
saying, ‘Peace, peace’,
when there is no peace.

-Jer. 6

A standard Christian greeting is “Peace be with you,” to which one answers, “And also with you.”  Yet, today’s lectionary reading cautions against wishing peace in a mindless way.  In the Buddhist tradition, the “peace” is already inside you, it’s just a matter of bringing it forth.
Thich Nhat Hanh says:
The Earth is so beautiful.
We are beautiful also. We can allow ourselves to walk mindfully, touching the earth, our wonderful mother, with each step.
We don’t need to wish our friends,
“Peace be with you.” Peace is already with them. We only need to help them cultivate the habit of touching peace in each moment.
