Bluebird Stopover

A pair of Eastern Bluebirds brightened up my snowy yard on a gray morning. The specially designed bluebird house installed for them has an opening of exactly 1.5 inches in diameter to ensure that larger birds cannot nest there. Although bluebirds often visit, and occasionally start to build a nest, they never stay through the whole season. After territorial skirmishes sparrows win out. Fingers crossed for this spring!

  1. I hope you are successful. I say evict the house sparrows!
Ever since we started offering mealworms, we’ve always had blues– multiple yearly broods with good fledgling rates. Lowe’s offers a Lucite window feeder for about $12 and I love it. It brings them up close and I can scare away those pesky starlings. 🙂

  2. Beautiful photos! Fingers crossed for you this coming season. Last year I had Carolina Chickadees trying to build a nest in my bluebird box, but the bluebirds came and chased them away. I didn’t know how I felt about that, ha! I adore my chickadees too.
