This no-care shade perennial flower is adding welcome early fall color into my garden at a time when many other flowers are past. Its name comes from the distinctive shape of its blossoms, which resemble a turtle’s head with its mouth slightly open. It can bloom through September and into October, depending on the weather.

The deer nibble mine, so I have to spray Repels-All on them. But I suppose they are hungry, too.

I think the white turtle is native, but the pink may or may not be. It’s interesting that they are also supposed to be deer resistant, but Eliza in the comments below has experienced otherwise!
